Surgery Scheduling and Tracking for Animal Facilities
Summary
Surgical procedures on research animals require documentation that spans pre-operative planning, intra-operative monitoring, and post-operative recovery, all of which must be attributable to specific personnel and linked to an IACUC-approved protocol. Colony.care's surgery module keeps this entire record in one place, auditable and exportable.
The Surgery Workflow
Schedule a surgery: select the animal, the procedure type, the surgeon, the date and time. Colony.care logs the pre-operative assessment (weight, clinical exam), the anesthetic protocol (drug, dose, route, time), intra-operative monitoring (heart rate, respiratory rate, SpO2, temperature at regular intervals), and post-operative recovery (time to sternal recumbency, pain assessment, follow-up checks).
Every entry is timestamped and attributed to the person who made it, essential for GLP-compatible surgical records. Post-operative monitoring schedules are configurable: set the frequency and duration of checks, and Colony.care reminds the assigned staff member when each check is due.
FAQ
Can we define custom surgical procedure types?
Yes. You define your facility's procedure list, survival surgery, non-survival surgery, minor procedure, etc., and Colony.care applies the appropriate record-keeping template.
